Halloween Hexie Swap!

Get ready for some spooky stitching fun! We're hosting a Halloween Hexie Swap at our next guild meeting, and we'd love for you to join in. Here's everything you need to know:

What?

We’re swapping 1" focal hexies basted to cardstock. You can either glue-baste or thread-baste them—whatever method you prefer!

  • Size: The measurement refers to one side of the hexagon being 1".

  • Papers: You can buy them or make your own (check out the links below).

  • Fabric: Use high-quality quilting cotton to prevent fraying.

  • Seam allowance: ¼" or ⅜", or use a 2.5" square of fabric for flexibility.

Tip: What is a "Focal Hexie"?

A focal hexie means there’s some “thing” or design in the center area of the hexie after it’s basted. For this swap, that "thing" should be creepy, spooky, or Halloween-themed! Whether it’s pumpkins, black cats, bats, or witches—anything that brings a Halloween vibe works perfectly.

If you're new to fussy cutting, my favourite resource is GnomeAngel. She has amazing tips, and I love tuning into her podcast while I work! (Tamara)

When?

At the October guild meeting!

How?

Bring as many hexies as you'd like to the meeting. You’ll swap the same number that you bring—whether it’s 1 or 100—and take home an equal number of hexies in return! We’ll do our best to make sure you get a variety, depending on how many people participate.

Then What?

Assemble your hexies however you like! You can hand stitch them into a project or even use machine applique if you're tired of handwork. If you're like me, you might just collect them for next year (lol).

Need some ideas? Check out the links below for inspiration!

Special Shoutout: Katja Marek

We’d like to highlight Katja Marek, a Canadian quilter who wrote The New Hexagon series. She's been an incredible resource for the English Paper Piecing (EPP) community and personally helped me (Tamara) learn EPP. Although she's now retired and caring for her grandson, her free resources live on at Paper Pieces. Check out her work—it’s truly inspiring!
