Calgary Modern Quilt Guild – 2026 Round Robin

We’re excited to launch the 2026 CMQG Round Robin, a fun activity that will bring our guild together through creativity, collaboration, and a healthy dose of modern quilty surprise! Whether you’ve participated before or are trying a Round Robin for the first time, this is a fantastic way to stretch your skills and connect with other makers in our community.

Program Dates

March – November 2026

Sign-ups will be open via Google Form  - Check your email or the Member's Only page for details

How It Works

Participants will start with either a block or a row. Each month, projects will rotate with other participants, with exchanges occurring at our monthly Guild meetings.

How you start your quilt is up to you:

🔷 Block-Based Round Robin

Start with a block of your choice (typically 12–18"). Each subsequent participant will add a new block or around your block in a way that complements the style or theme you’ve started.

🔷 Row-Based Round Robin

Start with a row—any style, any length you like. Each member will add their own row to build a unique collaborative quilt top.

Both formats are equally fun; choose the one that inspires you!

In the spirit of being mindful makers, remember to add to each quilt you receive using modern fabrics and designs, treating each quilt with the care and consideration as if it were your own.

What to Include in Your Starter Package

When you hand in your project at the March meeting, please bring:

  • Your starting block or row

  • Optional: Additional fabric to help guide colour direction (scraps, FQs, or yardage—totally up to you)

  • A small notebook that will stay with your quilt, where those adding to the quilt can add notes on their contributions like credit to patterns used, names of blocks, fabric notes/names, or inspiration.  You should start the notebook by sharing what inspired your starter block or row.

  • A notes page including likes/dislikes, colour preferences, taste in quilts, favourite designers, favourite patterns/blocks, how you plan to use your quilt, and approximate size expectation

  • A label for contributors to sign as your project travels

  • A clearly labelled bag or container with your name on it

Monthly Exchanges

At each monthly CMQG meeting, you’ll check in at the Round Robin table, drop off the project you worked on that month, and pick up the next one assigned to you. By November, you’ll get your own quilt back—now transformed by the hands and ideas of fellow modern quilters.

The November meeting will feature a Round Robin Reveal!

Sharing our Progress

Send in photos of your starter block and the quilts that you work on each month.  Progress photos will be shared on our website and our member’s only Facebook page!

Opting In and Out

Life happens - the Round Robin is designed to be flexible - you are able to opt in and out whenever you want.

You can also leave the Round Robin early if you feel that your quilt is done and perfect as is.

Not ready to join in March?  No worries, you are able to join in the fun at any time during the year.

Just let the organizers know ahead of time and we can arrange to have your quilt taken out of (or added into) the rotation.

Feeling stuck?  We don’t want anyone to struggle with what to do with a quilt assigned to them.  If you just aren’t sure what to do, contact the organizers and we can set you up with a volunteer who can help provide design or technique suggestions.

Participant Expectations

To keep the Round Robin running smoothly, please commit to the following:

  • Meet the monthly deadline. The collective group depends on you for the rotation to function.  If you are unable to attend the monthly meeting, please make arrangements to get the previous round to the meeting and to get the next round back to you.

  • If you need to miss a month or want to hop out of the round robin for a period of time, let the organizers know as soon as possible so alternative arrangements can be made.

  • Respect the maker’s style. Add your own voice while honouring their colour palette, theme, and notes.

  • Use quality materials and workmanship. Treat each quilt as if it were your own.

  • Keep it modern. Be sure to use modern fabrics and designs.

  • Keep the project clean, protected, and smoke-free.

  • Do not remove or alter previous rounds. All additions stay unless the owner requests otherwise.

  • Ask if you’re unsure. If a direction isn’t clear, add a note for the quilt owner.

  • Keep your additions reasonable. Aim for consistency so each participant contributes a similar amount of work.

  • Have fun and take creative risks! Round Robins thrive on collaboration and surprise.
