Blocks for Good – Scrappity-Do-Dah

Our Blocks for Good project continues into the new year with another fun scrap-busting block. Scrappity Do Dah is a cheerful design that uses 5” squares and 1½” strips, making it a great way to use leftover charm squares and binding strips. As always, donated blocks will be sewn into a quilt to be gifted within our community.

Blocks will be collected at CMQG meetings in February, March, April, and May 2026.
Blocks will be assembled into scrappy quilts once collected.
Fabric guidelines
You will need for each block:
• Four 5” squares. Choose any colours. Pick two lighter and two darker squares.
• Four 1½” x 7½” strips. Choose fabrics that contrast with your squares. Tone-on-tone prints, small prints, or solids all work well.
This is a true scrap-buster block — if it looks good together, it’s good to go!
Cutting and construction
Cut each 5” square in half diagonally, creating two triangles per square.
Choose four different 1½” x 7½” strips. Sew one strip into each cut square, inserting it between the two triangle halves. Tip: Start sewing near the same point on each strip each time — this helps keep your square nice and square.
Pressing matters.
For the two darker squares, press seams away from the inserted strip.
For the two lighter squares, press seams toward the inserted strip.
This allows seams to nest neatly when sewing the block together.
Trim each square to 5”. Place your ruler so the 45 degree line runs down the centre of the strip. This keeps your points aligned.
Sew the four squares together as shown in the sample block photo. The seams will nest at the centre point. Finished block size is 9½”.
