We have a new Blocks for Good pattern this month – Improv Cross blocks, or sometimes called Wonky Plus blocks. We’ll make these over the next 3 months, so bring your completed blocks to the October, November and December meetings. We’ll make these blocks 12 ½ inches square. You can make one big block, or any combination of blocks to end up with a 12 ½ inch block as shown in the examples below. Be creative with putting blocks together.
A few things to keep in mind as you make this improv block:
Add at least ½ to 1 inch to each square at the cutting stage to allow for trimming these wonky blocks to size.
Keep your cuts away from the edges – you don’t have to make dramatic cuts for the wonky crosses to show up.
When sewing crosses after your second cut in the square, line up and pin the centre of each cross to ensure they meet straight across.
Our colour palate is purple and green. Use the full range of purple, from mauve to dark purple, and greens from yellow-green to dark green, and blue-greens.
Feel free to use any prints (even flowers!) or solids for your blocks, although the X fabrics look best in a solid or reads-like-solid fabric.
