Community Giving Blocks

Happy spring to everyone! Several of our members have been active in offering quilts to recently arrived Ukrainian newcomers. Since many who are arriving in Canada are coming with very little, receiving a warm quilty hug from our community is always appreciated. Our Community Giving Committee also supports a number of other community based organizations, details of which are on our "Giving" page.

Our Community Giving chair has suggested a couple of blocks we would appreciate receiving, as they're easy to integrate into quilts:

Here's another way for you to help us make quilts for Ukrainian refugees and other community needs. You can practice a new technique as you create blocks for a good cause. We have cut a number of blocks to make half square triangles. We'll make 6" finished Half Square Triangle block, made using either 2-at-a-time, or 8-at-a-time techniques. The link below takes you to a Resource in the Modern Quilt Guild website by Yvonne Fuchs with full instructions. We have cut squares in 7 1/4" to make 2-at-a-time, and 14 1/2" to make 8-at-a-time blocks.

Another way to contribute is to make slab blocks from strips. Use up your scraps by putting together strip blocks of the same color ways. Blocks must be at least 12 1/2 square, but do not need to be trimmed. Once we get all of the blocks, they'll be trimmed, paired with a second block, sewn around the edges, and diagonally cut through the middle into half square triangles. They make cute and effective quilts!
