Our 2024 QuiltCon Community Challenge Quilt

Updated: Jan 7

Each year the Modern Quilt Guild sets out a challenge for all member guilds or groups to create a quilt using a defined colour palette and a prompt. This year, the palette featured muted and neutral shades, and the prompt was symmetry.

When we put the initial call out for members to help create and design the quilt, one of our members brought forward the Athabasca Quilt by Wayne K/ Tuxedo Park Designs. He graciously gave us permission to use the block which forms the foundation of the quilt, and several renderings of what our quilt could look like were kicked around. At this stage of the project, several members of the guild stepped forward to consult and narrow the designs down to two that were voted on by the guild.

Next, fabric was cut, and bagged into kits, which were distributed at our September meeting. We had 15 kits available, and they all went quickly! When the blocks were returned, they were assembled into a top by another member, and then quilted by another. An important part of the MQG challenge is that as many members of the guild participate in the challenge as possible, and this year is no exception to that!

The final steps in completing the quilt were to bind the quilt. The guild member who did the binding continued on the angular theme and did a bespoke binding for the edge. Another guild member attached the label so that the quilt can be appropriately categorized and hung at QuiltCon! We'll be back next month with some more pictures when the quilt actually hangs in the show.
